Today, the Health and Human Services Contraception mandate goes into effect. This mandate requires employers to provide contraceptives under their company’s insurance policy. Many religious institutions stand in vehement opposition to this mandate, claiming that it infringes on religious freedom.
Yesterday, the Heritage Foundation wrote a blog post on why this mandate is a threat to liberty:
“Unfortunately, the HHS mandate is only an early warning sign of how one-size-fits-all health care requirement will trample on religious liberty as well as individual liberty. August 1 will only be the beginning of Obamacare’s rules that undermine constitutional freedoms.
It should be a warning sign to Americans that one of the first parts of Obamacare to be implemented will force employers with religious and moral convictions to violate their consciences.”
Two days ago, a Colorado judge issued a temporary injection to block the mandate from being applied to Hercules Industries, a family-owned air conditioning manufacturer. This injection has given some hope that religious freedom could be restored. Quin Hillyer wrote on Fox news,
“While the injunction doesn’t block the mandate nationwide, it sends an unmistakable message that the HHS requirement will be on shaky legal ground wherever challenged.”
