Beretta To Move Business Out of Maryland Again?

While Governor Martin O’Malley expresses concern about the sequester causing “job killing cuts”, he’s working to implement legislation that not only infringes on our second amendment rights but will put a family owned business with a 500 year history out of Maryland.

Beretta USA recently invested more than one million dollars in a machine that would produce a civilian version of a machine gun designed for special operations forces. The plan was to expand the plant in Prince George’s county and to increase production.  However, under SB 281, which advanced out of a Senate committee, the gun would be illegal in the state where it is produced. Ironically, Beretta’s 9mm pistol, which is widely used by our own United States military and many police officers, would also fall under the ban because of it’s 13 bullet magazine.

According to the Washington Post, Jeffery Reh, general counsel for Beretta, reminded legislators when he gave testimony in Annapolis that this situation has happened before and did not end favorably for the state.

Reh pointed to the last time Maryland ratcheted up gun restrictions in the 1990s: Beretta responded by moving its warehouse operation to Virginia.

“I think they thought we were bluffing” in the 1990s, Reh said. “But Berettas don’t bluff.”

Bryan Preston of the PJ Tatler speculates that the company would move to Virginia as they did in 1990, to remain close to Washington. Reh indicates that the company being among the suppliers to the US military makes this situation particularly unpleasant.

“We literally are part of the arsenal of democracy,” said Reh, sweeping his hand toward the production floor, where on a recent afternoon more than 1,000 of the military version of the pistol sat in various stages of assembly. “That’s why we consider this so insulting.”

Democratic Senate President, Thomas V. Mike Miller also expressed concern:

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D – Calvert) said, “I’m concerned. I think they’re going to move. They sell guns across the world and in every state in the union – to places a lot more friendly to the company than this state.”

Former U.S. Secret Service Agent, and U.S. Senate Candidate Dan Bongino wrote in January on Watchdog Wire of the mass exodus in Maryland and the unfriendly business climate.

If you want to save this beautiful place, blessed by the Creator with natural gifts too numerous to count, then it is time to get serious. Action matters. In case you have failed to notice, we are losing people. The tax-and-spend opponents of common sense are acting while we are talking.  Maryland is suffering from an exodus of its citizens. When asked why they are leaving, the most common answer is, “you can’t do business here.”

Is Governor O’Malley prepared to compromise to save the jobs that Maryland stands to lose because of this gun control bill? The last thing our state needs is to send more jobs and more citizens to Virginia.
